TIPS FOR EXPLAINING CLIMATE CHANGE TO A FRIEND

Explain that the scientists are certain that there is man-made climate change. They are uncertain about how bad the resulting effects from climate change will be.

Ask them questions to learn about their lifestyle. For instance, "Where are you from," and "What do you do for a living." Then, relate the climate problem to their life situation.

For instance, if they say they are from the western United State, tell them that climate change is contributing to the droughts out west.

If they are farmers, tell them that global warming is contributing to changing plant growing patterns.

If they are people of faith, tell them that there are evangelical communities that believe in climate change, and remind them that Jesus wants us to to be "stewards of the earth" and take care of our beautiful planet.

The U.S. military is planning for climate change adaptation - they work hard to plan for all contingencies that could harm our citizens.

American citizens use many technologies that were originally used in the military, such as GPS. Citizens are likely to start planning for climate change adaptation, as well.

People don't like to be told their way of thinking is wrong. It’s hard to let go of hard-held beliefs and values!

The media frightens people by exaggerating the effects of climate change. Movies such The Day after Tomorrow, intent on frightening the audience, will have a strong effect on people. Some people will be strongly affected out by these types of movies for a couple of days but then then forget about them. To other people, these types of movies have a "fantasy" feel to them, and don't seem real.
